I am posting this for a friend. it is from the christmas party we had last year at the orphanage. I posted it to the flake family blog but not to mine.
This evening we took all the presents that we bought out to the orphanage to have a party with the kids. Now, I have to say that we weren't sure that the presents were age appropriate for some of the kids. We didn't realize how old some of them were until Anjina sent us a list with everyone's ages. These kids are short! But nevertheless, the kids seemed to really like their gifts. They were so well behaved and polite, even the younger ones. We felt like failures.... the 32 kids growing up in an orphanage are better mannered than our 5 who live in a family! I guess a lifetime of deprivation is the key? Actually their "mother" Anjina (the lady helping Joel and Natalya cut the cake) is a saint and an angel. They are lucky to have such a neat lady in charge of their care.
We had a little line-up.... Oliver called out the names on the gifts (then everyone around corrected his pronunciation in unison.... funny), Natalya handed over the gifts, McKay handed out candy canes, Jared and Joel handed out chocolate chip cookies. Then our kids sang a Primary Christmas song that they have been learning. Some of the kids also sang us Jingle Bells, the only Christmas song that they know.
The kids were all so sweet, but we are developing our favorites! They had such sweet little smiles when they got their very own present with their name on it. I love the picture of Oliver blowing up the little girl's inflatable chair, while she stands waiting for him. The little girl with the Barbie in her hands was so cute. She just hugged that doll and walked all around with it for the rest of the party. McKay had fun showing one of the boys how to get a matchbox car set to work. The picture of the young man who needs to shave is the oldest and first child that Anjina started caring for. His name is Rajat and he is mentally challenged. He is 23. They have gotten him training as a handyman, and he can do small carpentry jobs to make money. He was such a sweet young man. He came up to us and enthusiastically shook our hands and thanked us for the gifts. These children are just such neat kids. So happy even in a less than ideal situation.
Then they surprised us with a cake that they made, and a big card that one girl drew, and then everyone signed. It was so much fun. It couldn't have happened without your support! Thanks again for helping finance another great experience for our family to get to have!!!
